  • On Tuesday, August 9, Kenyans from across the country went to the polls to exercise their civic duty and the county’s top leaders were not left out.

Prior to the polls, the top guns burned political bridges to forge new ties to become part of a formidable team to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Kenyans.co.ke looks at the vote outcome in polling stations where bigwigs including Uhuru, Azimio running mate Martha Karua and Kenya Kwanza Principal Moses Wetangula cast their ballots.

    President Kenyatta

The Head of State cast his vote at the Mutomo Primary School which has four polling stations. However, despite backing Azimio candidate Raila Odinga, his Deputy, William Ruto took an early lead in provisional results from the polling centre.

Ruto garnered 983 (67.3 per cent) against Raila’s 479 (32.8) per cent of the total valid votes cast (1460).

    Martha Karua

Odinga;s running mate had an arguably difficult task in the Mount Kenya region – to counter UDA’s inroads in the region. However, in her own polling station, Azimio is trailing Kenya Kwanza.

With results from all three voting points in Mugumo Primary School, Ruto has a commanding lead of 911 votes (74 per cent) against her coalition flagbearer, who only managed 311 (25.2 per cent).

    Moses Wetangula

The Ford Kenya party leader received a head start in his quest to hit the 75 per cent target set by the UDA candidate in the Western Region.

Wetangula, who cast his vote at the Namakhele Primary School, has gifted Ruto 68 per cent against the former Prime Minister, who only garnered 31.5 per cent in provisional results from  2 polling stations.

He hopes to deliver the target with his Bungoma County poised to be a fierce battleground between the two front runners.

    Musalia Mudavadi

Mudavadi has so far achieved his target for him to get the seats promised in the Kenya Kwanza government should his co-principal be declared the President-elect.

In his home polling station, Ruto has a 75 per cent majority of the total votes cast. The UDA flagbearer’s 495 votes is nearly more than five times the 97 votes Odinga has.

If the same results will be replicated in other polling centres and eventually in the county, then the Former Vice President would have achieved his share of the bargain of winning the Western Region vote.
