  • Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate Raila Odinga on Wednesday, March 23, revisited his journey with NACR Kenya party leader Martha Karua.

Speaking in Nairobi where Karua officially declared her support for Azimio, Raila recounted his relationship with Kenya’s Iron Lady during the fight for the country’s second liberation.

He noted that at one time when he was being sought after by the police, the NARC Kenya party leader convened lawyers to escort him from to the Central Police Station.

“Martha marshalled lawyers, including the current Chief Justice, Martha Koome, to escort me from Agip house. We marched together to the police station because they were looking for me all over the place.

“I submitted myself to the police, but the officers claimed that they were not looking for me. However, that was an excuse because they wanted to come and arrest me at my home at night,” he recounted.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader claimed that Karua was central in the fight for multiparty democracy and has paid the price. He revealed that she offered free legal services to those who were charged in court.

“She was a general of the fight and bears the scars of the battle. Karua was one of the few people who stood up to tell the truth to the system and even gave free legal service for the many individuals apprehended haphazardly,” Odinga revealed.

Recounting their political journey, Raila disclosed that the former Cabinet Minister was present during the formation of FORD, and the two walked together until she was first elected as a member of Parliament (MP) in 1992.

“When we formed Ford she was with us and stayed with us in Ford Asili, Ford Kenya. She eventually ended up in DP, where she became among the first women to be elected as an MP,” he narrated.

President Uhuru Kenyatta’s handshake partner admitted that their relationship, just like any other, has had its own fair share of challenges that they have managed to walk through.

“Today, we revisited the pros and cons, the hills and the valleys, and the mountains that we have had to climb. But we are here and agreed that the time has come for us to reunite for this final phase,” he remarked.

Perhaps, the biggest climax yet of their relationship is her declaration to support him in his fifth stab at the presidency in the August 9 polls.
