  • The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga has disclosed details of a pledge made by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi towards his presidency.

Speaking in Kilifi on Saturday, February 19, the former Prime Minister explained that during his recent visit to the Asian country, he met Modi who promised to support him if he wins the August 9 Presidential Election.

He noted that the Indian head of state helped him float an idea where he intends to create a funds pool from which Kenyans can borrow money to start businesses.

From the pool, the repayment period will be extended and borrowers will not be required to repay the debt until seven years elapse.

“I recently met the Indian Prime Minister Nerandara Modi, [and told him about the long-term government loan project]. He said he will contribute to that kitty to help Kenyans,†Raila remarked while addressing residents of Bamba in Kilifi.

The African Union High Representative for Infrastructure Development however did not reveal if Prime Minister Modi promised to give financial aid in form of a grant or loan. He also did not reveal the amount he promised to deliver if he clinches the country’s presidency.

Odinga made the trip to India where he had accompanied his daughter, Rosemary Odinga, for specialised eye treatment in Kerala.

Prime Minister Modi on February 13 confirmed his meeting with Raila noting that Kenya and India enjoy strong bilateral ties.

â€œ[I am] delighted to receive my friend H.E. Raila Amolo Odinga, former Prime Minister of Kenya. I fondly recollect my past interactions with him in India and Kenya. India and Kenya enjoy strong bilateral relations and we welcome further strengthening of our ties,” Modi stated.

The ODM leader further reiterated his campaign pledge to give out a Ksh6,000 monthly stipend to low income households through the Social Protection Fund.

“They are saying I’m lying, and that the government doesn’t have enough funds [to support the project]. I have served as Kenya’s prime minister, and I know where money is in government,” Raila stated.

He added, “unlike Deputy President William Ruto who made several promises in the lead-up to the 2013 and 2017 polls, but failed to execute them, I will ensure that I implement my plans fully.â€

Raila taking a swipe at Deputy President William Ruto, refuted claims that he is a state project.

“They are claiming that I am a State project. Can Raila Amolo Odinga be someone’s project? I stood with them (President Kenyatta and DP Ruto) when they were taken to The Hague, both in 2013 and 2017, until their cases were thrown out,†he noted.
