  • A Probox vehicle that was filmed racing against a Subaru along the Thika Super Highway in February 2021, was involved in an accident on Monday, March 1, 2021.

The vehicle is reported to have lost control while travelling along the Sagana Makutano Highway in Kirinyaga county when it landed in a ditch.

It had four occupants at the time of the crash and was transporting miraa. No fatalities were reported with the passengers escaping with minor injuries.

The cargo was offloaded and the vehicle was eventually towed when traffic police officers arrived at the scene.

The vehicle was identified by its number plates and conspicuous sign at the rear reading ‘Pambana na Hali Yako’ which loosely translates to “deal with your own problems.”

Vehicles ferrying miraa in the region are known to speed on highways, which has caused many accidents on the roads leading to deaths and injuries to many road users.

In response, the government unveiled a system to regulate the speed of the vehicles.

In the new requirement, the drivers will be provided with safety stickers and will be required to maintain a speed of less than 100kph.

In the clip shared in February 2021, the vehicle was seen speeding in an apparent contest with a Subaru on the busy highway.

The two racing cars are seen dangerously overtaking other road users maneuvering in their high speeds driving at 180 KM/hr at some point.

Speed limits issued by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA) caps the speed limit on the highway at 110km/h.

The agency, while issuing the directive in 2018, also directed that the cap should not apply to matatus and other public service vehicles as they should not exceed 80km/h.
