Mogua Moruri, a retired headteacher, and his wife, Florence Mogoa, the headteacher of Gekongo SDA Primary School, were burnt alive on Thursday, July 29.
The family clashed with the police following initial reports by Kisii Country Commissioner Allan Machari who stated that the fire incident was caused by a gas explosion.
The family argued that the fire was more intense in the couple’s bedroom despite the police report that indicated it was caused by a gas explosion.
According to the family, however, if that were the case, the fire would have been more intense in the kitchen area.
They further accused the police of not manning the scene of the fire, allowing residents to go inside the couple’s house.
They alleged that the residents might have tampered with evidence that could have revealed the cause of the fire.
The family who addressed the press on Friday, July 30, claimed that they only found few burnt items a clear indication that the house was first looted.
Furthermore, the family stated that the house was locked from outside suggesting that those behind the attack did not want the couple alive.
They blamed the police for issuing statements before concluding investigations and are now calling for DCI George Kinoti to intervene.
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Gucha branch executive Secretary Lucy Machuka condemned the incident stating that it has left them in shock.
“We are calling on the police to get the perpetrators. What we have witnessed here is uncalled for,†said Ms. Machuka.
