  • Laikipia Woman Representative Cate Waruguru was heckled during a funeral in Laikipia on Friday, November 27, forcing the pastor who was presiding to intervene.

Waruguru stated that the region would get extra funding due to the creation of a new constituency in Laikipia Central.

She articulated the future prospects of the constituency, explaining how the residents would get an extra budget of Ksh100 million in terms of CDF allocation, Ksh50 million for roads and infrastructure and a university.

The residents were listening keenly as she announced the proposed good fortunes until she stated that the proposal was contained in the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) Constitutional Amendment Bill 2020, after which they became hostile.

“You voted for me to represent your interests in Parliament and we will not be left behind. If passing the BBI means we get a new constituency, a new university and extra resources, I urge you to sign the document,†she struggled to finish her point as the heckling increased.

The mourners shouted until the MP’s voice became inaudible. The MC who was leading the service tried to intervene but the crowd was persistent.

The pastor who was presiding over the funeral, intervened, pleading that he was ready to beg and kneel to ask for the congregation to respect the young man who was being buried.

Kiambu Woman Representative Gathoni wa Muchomba endured the same hostility in Kiambu on November 5, while she endorsed the BBI report.

The residents in President Uhuru Kenyatta’s home county maintained that they wanted development in the area but were not ready to support the BBI.

Amid the chaos, Gathoni turned to PS Kibicho, known for his no-nonsense demeanour to calm down the angry locals.

Kibicho calmed the situation and asked residents to read the report and understand it, rather than let leaders influence their decisions.

“Let us not allow our emotions to blind us, rather, let us read the report and make our decisions,” Kibicho stated.
