NCIC Responds to Ruto's Leaked Audio on Threat to Slap Uhuru

  • The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has rubbished claims that Deputy President William Ruto’s leaked audio amounted to hate speech and incitement.

Ruto was recorded claiming to have nearly slapped President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2017, prior to the Repeat General Election. The audio created a buzz, with Ruto’s opponents, Azimio La Umoja, playing it in several rallies to discredit the DP.

In an interview on Citizen TV on Monday night, July 4, NCIC commissioner Sam Kona, clarified that the audio lacked the threshold warranting investigation.

Kona argued that NCIC would have acted if proven that the audio intended to cause bodily harm or create animosity between rivalling groups or meting actual violence to the subject, President Uhuru.

“NCIC draws the line between a verbal attack against an individual and against a community because most incidents of hate speech lead to violence when the evidence is manipulated and used by a particular community to advance a political goal.

“The difference between the President and the Deputy President has come into political space and raised NCIC eyebrows.

“So far what we have heard is what happened several years ago,” Kona explained.

However, he underlined that NCIC deployed a multi-agency team to monitor political events and warned politicians from making speeches that border on hate speech.

In his interview, Kona also assured the country that the commission will work in tandem with other relevant agencies to ensure the elections are smooth and peaceful.

He lauded the Judiciary, under Chief Justice Martha Koome for establishing five courts to deal specifically with hate speech-related cases and election malpractices.

Ruto, in his response, confessed and affirmed that he indeed was irked by Uhuru who was against competing in the Repeat General Election.

Speaking at a rally in Imenti, Meru County, the DP defended the contents of the audio, explaining that he was within every right to push Uhuru to defend his seat.

“They are now secretly recording people and sharing it all over that Ruto pushed the President. Did you want us to allow him to leave the seat which we woke up at 5 am?” he wondered.

“Even If I forced him, is there any problem? Was it not because he is my friend?” Ruto hit back at his critics.

Azimio La Umoja running mate, Martha Karua, had claimed that the DP was temperamental to lead the nation. Other Azimio La Umoja candidates seized the moment to campaign against Ruto.

“Don’t elect the young man full of anger and bile. If you would slap the President, what would you do to an ordinary Kenyan? If you cant handle the role of a deputy how can you be president?” Karua trolled the DP.
