  • Incoming Rift Valley Regional Commissioner Mohamed Ahmed Maalim has broken his silence since being appointed as George Natembeya’s replacement.

Speaking while assuming office on Tuesday, January 18, the disciplinarian disclosed that he would ensure rampant killings that have affected the region are curbed.

Maalim expressed confidence in carrying out the mandate of his new role noting that he had amassed a 30-year experience in administrative work.

“My goal is to do away with the cases of killings rampant in this region. I am hopeful that together with other stakeholders in the region we will bring the change the people want to see in the Rift Valley region.

“I want to say that I have close to 30 years of experience working in National administration across several regions in the country and I have been dutiful,” he added.

Maalim further noted that he achieved peace missions in various regions across the country.

The commissioner, nonetheless, affirmed that he would emulate some of Natembeya’s traits such as his involvement in grassroots affairs.

“I initiated the Jua Jirani Yako campaign in Garissa to combat terrorism and it was fruitful. In Mt. Elgon, Bungoma County during my tenure as the Commissioner, we faced the Sabaot Land Defense Forces. The journey to restore peace in Mt. Elgon began then,” he added.

Natembeya resigned on Wednesday, January 12, noting that he was shifting focus to his Trans Nzoia gubernatorial bid.

“I will from now on focus on politics as l seek the backing of residents of Trans Nzoia to become their governor,” Natembeya announced.

He intensified his bid after he was endorsed by the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) on Sunday, January 2.

The party, allied to Defence Cabinet Secretary, Eugene Wamalwa, backed Natembeya and described him as the perfect candidate capable of clinching the seat.
