Nairobi County Government raided several supermarkets on Friday, November 4, unearthing how waste products are poorly managed.
The Nairobi County Anti-Dumping Unit conducted a raid that saw waste illegal dumpers netted in Ruai.
Supermarkets were accused of using street boys to dump waste in Nairobi.
While speaking during the operation, Nairobi County Environment and Natural Resources Director, Malawi John-Paul, noted that supermarkets circumvented by-laws for proper waste management.
“Acting on a tip-off from members of the public, the establishment at one supermarket in Ruai is illegally dumping wastes to the environment by giving street boys some stipend after dumping the wastes in illegal sites,” the Director stated.
He confirmed his worst fear when he discovered supermarkets lacked waste management plans at their premises per National Environment Management Authority’s (NEMA) regulations.
“We did a raid and confirmed that some supermarket in Ruai doesn’t have a wastes management plan on their premises, they are actually giving waste to street boys who are dumping it in the immediate environment, besides the road, and in the market areas,” he stated.
Malawi urged Nairobi residents to be vigilant and responsible for their wastes, adding that, as of that time, the only legal disposal site was in Dandora.
Pursuant to the Nairobi City waste management Act of 2015, the Anti-Dumping Unit board aforementioned that it is illegal for anyone to dump waste in unprecedented sites.
Nairobi governor, Johnson Sakaja, unveiled a city-wide operation to clear the county free from waste after he was sworn into office.
“In our first month in office, we have collected 70,000 tonnes. You will see sustainable changes.
“As we unclog the drainage system throughout the city, let’s kindly desist from further illegal dumping,” he urged in October 2022.
