  • Tigania East Member of Parliament Josphat Kabeabea Gichunge is counting losses after his car was torched by unknown youth.

Reports indicated that the incident occurred on the night of Saturday, August 6, at around 10 p.m. near Thiiti bridge in Meru County.

Confirming the incident, area police officer Joel Chepkwony noted that investigations to apprehend the perpetrators were still underway.

It is still not clear what led to the incident neither is the value of the damaged property.

Gichunge, who is seeking to defend his seat, also remained mum regarding the incident, and had not released s a formal statement by the time of publishing this article.

The vehicle was reduced to ashes after a busy day of political campaigns marking the last time politicians and political parties were allowed to actively attempt to sway the public into voting for them.

Separately, Kisii gubernatorial candidate Simba Arati was also forced to issue a statement after reports emerged that his campaign vehicle ploughed through a crowd in Bobasi killing one person.

Arati noted that the claims were baseless attempts by his rivals to curtail his campaign bid to clinch the governor’s seat ahead of the Tuesday, August 9 polls.

Further, he urged his supporters to maintain peace during and after the electioneering period.

Kenya Police officers mounted a security operation across countrywide to avert the cyclical threats to violence as the country gears to the polls.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), on the other hand, dispatched 250 monitors to observe the conduct of the police during the season.

“All IPOA monitors will be easily identified by IPOA staff badges, IEBC observer badges and their branded attire,” the organization said in a statement.

“Members of the public are encouraged to report to IPOA any case of misconduct or commendations of the police during the election period through toll free number 1559,” read the statement from IPOA.
