- On Sunday, January 5, a clip went viral on social media showing Mumias East MP Benjamin Washiali beating up a man who had been apprehended.
In the video lasting 25 seconds, the victim is seen captured by a group of men who are keen to inflict injury.
Speaking in Swahili, the man is seen trying to explain himself before the Mumias East MP attacks him with a slap across the face.
The defenceless man is pushed back by the resultant impact as the legislator continues with his attack punching and kicking the man who isn’t able to fight back.
The clip made rounds on social media with many calling for the arrest of the MP.
“This is not right, he does not have any right to beat up someone,” one user wrote.
When contacted by kenyagist.com, Washiali explained that the incident captured in the clip occurred in 2015.
“This was a very old clip that came up in 2015. We were in our usual rounds of Mumias field and we found him.
“We found those guys siphoning fuels from the factory’s tractors. It was an act of anger and we were trying to stop pilferage in the company,” he told this writer over the phone.
