Nairobi MCAs on Saturday, December 14, convened at the Assembly to whip up a motion to lay the ground for the impeachment of Governor Mike Sonko.

According to a report by Daily Nation, the meeting was graced by elected representatives from across the political divide.

County Assembly Minority Whip and Makongeni Ward MCA Peter Imwatok revealed that the Saturday meeting was preceded by a similar one held the previous day on Friday, December 13 at Windsor Hotel where the MCAs discuss the state of Nairobi and the way forward.

“We have come to an agreement that Governor Sonko’s problem is not Nairobi’s or the county assembly’s and though a section of jubilee MCA’s want it to be so, we will not allow that. A majority of MCAs are in agreement that Nairobi has a problem,” Imwatok was quoted by the news outlet.

“A section of like-minded MCAs are saying we must follow the constitution. We are not going to treat Sonko like a baby while letting the county go down the drain because we want to please him,” he added.

Imwatok revealed that a letter had already been sent to Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi requesting a special seating and that they would commence the collection of the required 82 signatures on Monday, December 16.

“Next week will not be business as usual. As ODM and like-minded MCAs from the Jubilee party, we will not worship Sonko while Nairobi is in shambles. We are going to take action and make a statement that Sonko can’t run Nairobi as a private entity, before President Uhuru and Raila Odinga weigh in on the matter,” the Makongeni representative stated.

He, however, revealed that a section of Jubilee MCAs had still not taken a stand on the ouster motion.

“We advised the governor to nominate a deputy governor but he refused and since now is a defining period for Kenyans in Nairobi, we will not be quiet,” Imwatok proclaimed.

Embakasi Ward MCA Michael Ogada vowed to spearhead the collection of signatures.

“We solely have two alternatives, either us or him. So we have no choice but to impeach him. We cannot go home because of Sonko’s sins. I will be spearheading the collection of the signatures,” Ogada stated.

Efforts to reach Governor Sonko for comment were unsuccessful.
