The Likoni Ferry tragedy has continued to elicit mixed emotions from various individuals and this time, Nyali MP Mohammed Ali also gave a piece of his mind.

On Wednesday, October 2, during a session in Parliament, he brought up the matter in an emotional speech about the unfortunate death of Mariam Kigenda and her 4-year-old daughter who drowned on Sunday, September 29.

The MP began his presentation in a meek voice, offering his condolences to the bereaved family.

His voice, however, began to rise as he complained over the delay in the retrieval operation.

“Your honour, it has been three days since the incident and the government has since sat and watched without offering help,” he ranted.

He continued to argue that the government had set aside a lot of money for such disasters.

“Kenya Ferry Services was granted Ksh58 million for the purchase of CCTV cameras that would enable them spot such tragedies with ease whenever they happen,” the legislator pointed out.

He went on to passionately blame the government for the incident, demanding that the deceased’s kin be compensated for the loss.

He also faulted Managing Director of Kenya Ferry Services Bakari Gowa, Kenya Coast Guard Director General Brigadier Vincent Loonena and Navy Commander Major General Franklin Mghalu, whom he felt should be answerable for the misfortune.

The MP argued that they had the means of helping the drowning duo, but failed to do so.

This comes after the government, through its spokesperson Cyrus Oguna, unveiled its grand plan to retrieve the bodies of Likoni tragedy victims.

“Today’s project will be to determine the exact location of the sunken car and bodies. This will be made possible by the use of a robot that will give the exact location of the vehicle because as per now, those who were able to locate the car only gave a general area,” disclosed Oguna.
