The family of the two Likoni Ferry tragedy victims has made a U-turn on their stance, after the car was spotted by the team leading the retrieval of the vehicle from in the Indian ocean.

In an address to the press on Wednesday, October 9, Government Spokesperson Cyrus Oguna revealed that a car bearing the number plate like that of the late Mariam Kighenda was located in a cave 58 meters deep.

Oguna further disclosed that the retrieval exercise had kicked off.

In response, the family, through a spokesperson, expressed that their hope had been renewed more than 11 days later.

“We have been receiving a blow-by-blow account of the operation. We were shown the images and our hope has been renewed,” stated spokesman Luka Mbati.

Earlier, the family had expressed dissatisfaction in the state’s strategy and hired their own private diver to hasten the retrieval process.

The deceased’s Kin hired Musa Sila, a 54-year-old private rescue diver who is based in Mombasa.

The diver was, however, suspended by the government on grounds that he was communicating false information to the family concerning whereabouts of the mother and her daughter.

Mbati also set the record straight regarding claims that the family had been asked to start preparing for burial plans.

Rumours had become awash, on social media, that the state had secretly recovered the bodies and liaised with the family for burial.
