A Member of the County Assembly has found himself in trouble after he was arrested during a crackdown on the killer gang of Matungu that was ordered by Interior CS Dr. Fred Matiang’i.
Police announced that Libinus Oduor, the Mayoni Ward MCA was arrested over the recent killings in Matungu, Kakamega County.
The ongoing operation in the area was ordered on Thursday when Matiang’i visited the area following weeks of attacks that left more than 20 people dead.
The Standard reported that before the arrest, CS Matiang’i had announced that police were still following what he termed ‘crucial leads’ linking local politicians and that in a few days, the politicians would be arrested to record statements in relation to the bizarre killings.
After the tour of the area, the CS ordered the deployment of GSU officer in the area in a bid to flash out the criminal element that had been giving residents sleepless nights.
Matiang’i, accompanied by Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai, toured Kakamega and Vihiga counties to assess the security situation.
Earlier police had announced that they were targeting three politicians who were suspected to be financing the group that was attacking residents.
The three, as stated by police, were a sitting MP, an influential ward rep, and a former parliamentary aspirant.
According to police, the gangster had killed 13 people while the rest had been torched by the angry residents who were fighting back the gang’s invasion.
