Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have revealed an intriguing flow of events that saw them arrest a woman suspected of stealing Ksh 4 million from her employer.
Detectives from the directorate on Tuesday, July 19, arrested the woman identified as Miriam Mwelu while undergoing a ritual to evade arrest at a witch doctor’s shrine in Kiambu County.
The sleuths reported that they found Mwelu immersed in a basin full of blood from a dead fowl while the witch doctor recited incantations.
The shrine was packed with paraphernalia including horns, feathers, and cowrie shells. These are believed to be part of the witch doctor’s tools of the trade in his purported dark force business.
Upon noticing the presence of the officers, the witch doctor persisted in the incantations in an attempt to scare them and derail their mission.
However, the operatives were unmoved and waited patiently before making a move. Meanwhile, the suspect was waiting with her eyes closed hoping that the sleuths would vanish.
The detectives cut short the drama and arrested Mwelu before leading her to her maiden home in Murang’a County. Further digging led to the recovery of Ksh 1.5 million that was hidden in the homestead.
The detectives also recovered jewelry that was part of the stolen valuables from the woman’s employer.
Mwelu had allegedly stolen the Ksh 4 million from Charity Waithira’s home in Karen where she was working as a house help on June 22. She was also accused of feeling with the employer’s jewelry worth more than Ksh 500,000.
The DCI has since warned criminal elements with the habit of using witchcraft as a shield from the police. The detectives reported that the witch doctor had labeled the service as “kutoshikwa na DCI” and is offered at a cost of Ksh 5,000.
“DCI is cautioning criminals who have committed crimes not to waste time seeking the services of wizards to protect them from our officers” read a statement from the DCI.
“Detectives rely on actionable intelligence supported forensically through science that cannot be challenged by the dark powers of a witch doctor.”
The operation was conducted in collaboration with operatives from the elite Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) and those from the Special Services Unit (SSU).
