The two Cuban doctors who were abducted in Kenya on April 12, 2019, are believed to be alive and in good health, following a statement by the Cuban government on Tuesday, December 17.

Cuban Council of Ministers Vice President, Ines Maria Chapman informed that she had received credible intelligence from Kenyan authorities that doctors Landy Rodríguez Hernández and Assel Herrera Correa were alive and in fine spirits.

“The Kenyan authorities ratified that both doctors are well and will continue efforts for their safe return, she stated.

“Our people can be sure that the Cuban government, like the Government of Kenya, is making huge efforts, paying special attention to this issue,” she added.

The Cuban official went on to convey gratitude to the Government of Kenya for the efforts made.

Back in April, the two made global headlines after they were ambushed on their way to work, with intelligence reports published by the Daily Nation claiming that they may have been sold off to Al Shabaab militia.

Herrera Correa is a specialist in comprehensive general medicine while his colleague is a specialist in general surgery.

They formed part of a 100-member Cuban medical brigade that was working in Kenya under an agreement between the two countries.

Prior to the latest update, it was reported that the unknown abductors had demanded a ransom of Ksh100 billion, to ensure their safe return.
