  • The murder trial of Lawrence Njoroge Warunge has failed to take off again after the prosecution told the court that the suspect was still unfit for trial.

The prosecution said that Warunge was still mentally unfit to stand trial because he was still under medication.

Kiambu Chief Magistrate Patricia Gichohi, directed the prosecution team to issue an update on the accused mental status on Monday, March 15.

The court heard that Warunge will visit Mathari hospital on Friday, March 5, for a review on his mental state.

The 22-year-old, Information Technology (IT) student is being held at the Industrial Area Remand Prison.

Kiambu Law Court  on January 26, found Warunge unfit to stand trial after a psychiatrist presented his mental results in the court.

The court ordered Warunge to be remanded for a further 30 days after which a second mental assessment would be undertaken.

The magistrate ordered Warunge to be held in police custody in Nairobi until March 1, 2021, when the matter will be mentioned.

Warunge confessed to killing five people among them his family members in Kiambu County.

Those he is said to have allegedly killed include his father Nicholas Njoroge Warunge, his mother Ann Wanjiku, his nephew Maxwell Njenga, his brother Christian Njenga Njoroge and farmhand James Kinyajui Wambaa.

Johansen Oduor, Chief Government Pathologist stated that the five had similar injuries, stab wounds to the chest and blunt force trauma to the head.
