Kenya’s Covid-19 Positivity Rate Drops to 12.4%

  • Kenya has recorded 1,153 new Covid-19 cases, from a sample size of 9,316 tested in the last 24 hours with the positivity rate standing at 12.4%.

    During a briefing on Saturday, April 24, Health CS Mercy Mwangangi, stated that 191 patients had recovered from the disease, with 109 from home-based care and 82 from various health facilities.

    Total recoveries now stand at 106,284 of which 77,417 are from Home Based Care and Isolation while 28,867 are from various health facilities

    On a sad note, 20 patients have succumbed to the disease, one reported in the last 24 hours, five on diverse dates, and 14 are late deaths reports from health records audits. The cumulative deaths so far are at 2,603.

    Of the cases, 1,128 are Kenyans while 25 are foreigners, with 705 being males and 448 being females. The youngest is a nine-month-old child while the oldest is 101 years old.

    A total of 1,453 patients are currently admitted to hospitals, while 6,832 under home-based care.

    210 patients are in ICU, 49 on ventilatory support, 130 on supplemental oxygen and 31 under observation.

    Another 163 are separately on supplemental oxygen, 151 in general wards and 12 in high dependency unit.

    On the distribution of the Covid-19 vaccines, Mwangangi stated that the government was in discussions with the COVAX facility to get all the doses at week 12.

    “We are talking to other pharmaceutical companies, spreading our risk, so we can get second doses for the vaccine,” she noted.

    She, however, noted that the Covid-19 situation in the counties continued to be dire.

    “Some counties have reported increased admissions and constraints on facilities. The challenges with availability of oxygen are being addressed,” she assured.

    So far, 1,020,000 doses out of the planned 3,564,000 doses have been delivered to Kenya.

    As of April 23, 2021,  822, 651 persons had been vaccinated against Covid-19 comprising of targeted groups including health care workers, security personnel, teachers and people aged over 58 years.

    Out of 208,418 health workers targeted for vaccination, 152, 469 (73%) have received their first dose while out of 330,671 teachers targeted 126,322 (38%) and 66,677 security personnel have so far been vaccinated.
