  • Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Magaret Mwachanya spoke on her untimely resignation from the commission in 2018.

Mwachanya alongside Connie Maina and Paul Kurgat resigned in a huff on April 16, 2021. The three stated that they had no faith in the commission’s Chair, Wafula Chebukati.

Speaking to Citizen TV on Tuesday, August 10, she disclosed that there had been a lot of controversies surrounding her resignation and that of three other commissioners.

She stated that she would wait for 20 years to disclose the reasons for her resignation from IEBC stating that it would fuel the controversy further.

“I give it like 20 years. One day I will now tell Kenyans or rather the world why I resigned,” she stated.

Mwachanya denied claims of ongoing wrangles between the then IEBC secretariat and the commissioners, stating that she had only heard of it from presenter Sam Gituku.

Mwachanya stated she had no problem with the IEBC Secretariat.

She also declined to comment on the overturning of the 2017 election by the Supreme Court.

When asked whether she kept in touch with other commissioners and the current secretariat, Mwachanya burst into laughter.

“You are asking me whether I am in touch the Chebukati team? I am in touch with the other two colleagues (Connie and Kurgat),” she stated.

The ambassador had a few words of wisdom to share with the in-coming commissioners. She advised them to stick to their mandate once they assume office.

In addition, she stated that it would be impossible for the commissioners to impress all players in an election who comprise candidates and voters.

Mwachanya advised them to remain sober, neutral and ready to execute their mandate without fear of favour as they hold a very sensitive office in the country during elections.

She further advised them to work without listening to the contestants and focus on following up on things that are supposed to be done in a correct manner. She further asked them to always be ready to face procurement litigations.
