  • Kenyan star Tyler Onyango has been promoted to the first-team by Everton manager Carlo Ancelloti.

The 17-year old has been grinding his way through Everton’s youth set up leading up to his latest achievement.

Onyango impressed the English club’s Under 23’s side leading to his promotion to the senior team, with his youth coach David Unsworth certain that the starlet is headed for a bright future.

“He looks the part, his gains are outstanding. He’s got the physique, the pace. I’m trying not to get too excited too soon but I like what I see.

“All the best players start with us when they are 16 or 17. He came in and took to the level straight away,” Unsworth told the media.

The teenage sensation signed a 3-year professional contract when he joined the U23 side for the Merseyside club.

Described as a versatile and powerful midfielder, who occasionally plays as a fullback, making him the ideal candidate to help Ancelloti navigate the league with key players missing.

Interestingly, star player Lucas Digne (who plays a similar role to Onyango for the senior team) has had injury setbacks that could provide the opportunity for the teenager to make his mark in the first team.

Born of a Kenyan father and an English mother, the rising star is yet to be capped by the English national team, making him eligible to play for the Kenyan national team, if he chooses to.

“I have been to Kenya many times over the years, most recently in the summer of 2018,” he once stated during an interview in which he revealed that he was open to playing for the Kenyan national team.

He joined Everton aged 8 and has been making his way up the ranks at a rate that surprised his coaches.

“I listen and learn every day and take in as much as possible. I want to maximise my potential and see where that goes,” he explained during a recent interview.

Lucas Digne’s injury woes could see the young Onyango make his debut sooner than anticipated, with the Merseyside club set to play West Ham on January 1.

Referred to as the most competitive league in the world of football, the English Premier League has provided the stage for some gifted Kenyans to show their skills against some of the best players in the world.

Recently, two young Kenyan international footballers signed new contracts with English National league teams.

Jonah Anania Ayunga (who formerly played for Brighton and Hove Albion as a striker) moved to Sutton United.

23-year-old Joshua Kipkemboi Lelan moved from Crawley Town FC to Aldershot Town.

Harambee Stars skipper Victor Wanyama is arguably the most famous Kenyan to play in the first tier of English football during his tenure at Tottenham Hotspur.

Other notable Kenyan rising stars are Richard Odada, a 19-year midfielder currently playing for Serbian giant club Red Star Belgrade, Wilkims Ochieng, a 17-year-old striker currently contracted at Club Brugge in Belgium and Michael Gitau, a defender at Middlesborough in England.
