  • The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced the closure of the Thika-Garissa Road for a period of four weeks.

In a statement on Friday, April 8, the authority declared that the road will be closed from April 9 to Saturday, May 7, 2022.

According to KeNHA, construction will take place on the road thus disrupting traffic flow on the highway.

A section of the Thika – Garissa ( A3 ) Road, will be closed off at the Yatta Virtual Weighbridge.

KeNHA is constructing the concrete pavement for the Yatta Virtual Weighbridge but officers will be on the ground to guide motorists and ease traffic jams which normally disrupt movement.

“The Kenya National Highways Authority ( KeNHA ) wishes to notify the public that a section of Thika – Garissa ( A3 ) Road, at the Yatta Virtual Weighbridge, at approximately Km 20 + 130 from Kilimambogo, will be closed from Saturday, April 9, 2022, to Saturday, May 7, 2022.

“This is to pave way for the construction of concrete pavement for the Yatta Virtual Weighbridge. Motorists will be guided to the diversion provided.

“All motorists are requested to exercise caution and follow the proposed traffic management plan as they cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on site,” the statement by KeNHA read.

Motorists will use the diversion at Yatta NYS Field Unit from Thika and they will emerge at Mwingi and use the same route when coming back to Thika.

Meanwhile, KeNHA is preparing to roll out the Nairobi Expressway which will be in use from April 2022. Motorists will be required to register in order to officially use the expressway once it is open to the public.

The Moja Expressway Company, an affiliate of the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), will operate and maintain the road for 27 years.

Motorists will have to pay for using the Expressway. The fee is payable at the toll stations and is dependent on the distance travelled on the road.

“The charge will be based on the distance covered by the motorist while using the Expressway. This means that a motorist pays the amount once they exit the Expressway.

“In the case that you use the Expressway from Westlands to Mlolongo, you will be deducted Ksh300 or 300 points if you use the electronic means of payment.”

For instance, motorists using the highway from Mlolongo to Westlands would require the motorist to spend another Ksh300.

Motorists using the James Gichuru route to Museum Hill will pay Ksh100 while those heading to Capital Centre and Haile Selassie Avenue will spend Ksh160.
