  • Kieni Member of Parliament Kanini Kega has issued a clarification following an earlier viral video in which he appeared to insinuate that the Jubilee Party does not fully trust Azimio presidential flag-bearer Raila Odinga.

In a statement on Sunday, April 10, the lawmaker, who doubles as the party’s Director of Elections maintained that he had overwhelming support for the former Prime Minister.

He further dismissed the misunderstanding as an agenda from his political opponents explaining that Raila’s track record was unmatched.

“Despite the propaganda from UDA sympathisers, I will not be swayed in changing my overwhelming support for Baba whom I will do everything to convince Kenyans, especially the good of people of Central to endorse his candidature.

“He means well and his track record when he served with the retired President Kibaki during a coalition government speaks for itself. Azimio will form the next government and that’s not even debatable,” stated Kega.

He further noted that he was ready to campaign on behalf of the former Prime Minister across the country unfazed.

“Raila needs to be rewarded because the country is experiencing peace following his handshake with President Uhuru,†he added.

In a clip that made rounds earlier, Kega was quoted comparing Raila and Deputy President William Ruto with many claiming that he meant none was a strong candidate for the region.

He reflected on the 2007 General Election, where the political landscape changed when Raila’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) joined forces with his nemesis, Mwai Kibaki’s Party of National Unity (PNU) to form the grand coalition government after contested presidential results.

He added that the only way for the Mt Kenya region to secure their interests was to have the numbers within Parliament after the upcoming General Election.

“Those who are vying for the Presidency, we don’t have our friend ( someone to secure interests). We have also toured the country extensively and we know Raila will become President on August 9. The question is this, when Raila becomes President, where will we be?” Kega asked the people.

His critics further indicated that he predicted a post-election pact similar to the handshake, between the former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and William Ruto.
