  • Renowned media personality Julie Gichuru has revealed the reason she abandoned her dream career at an early age.

In a post on her Instagram account, she stated that her dream was to become a theatre actress, scriptwriter and director.

However, that career path did not look promising enough to secure her a comfortable future since the theatre industry in the 1980s had not developed enough.

“I could have done anything I wanted with my life. I would have become a theatre actress, scriptwriter and director. Not film, not TV, but it was not a viable path to a stable livelihood and independence – that was important to me, so I opted to study law, and went on to get an MBA,†she stated.

She however recognised that the world had changed, and now young people have the opportunity to explore uncharted careers and encouraged them to be bold and courageous.

Julie is one of the many media celebrities who landed in the media industry despite pursuing different courses in the university.

She is part of a select group of media celebrities whose love for the media industry superseded their love for the esteemed law degree.’

Here is a list of other trainers lawyers who left the courtroom to become media personalities:

    Ken Mijungu

Before exiting Nation Media in July 2020, Ken Mijungu was known as the fiery anchor who hosted the late-night Side Bar programme that posed all the hard questions to newsmakers across the country.

On the side, Mijungu also ran a legal consultancy firm called Ken Mijungu Consultancy that specialises in legal research and counsel, media, immigration and finance among others.

He pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Law at Moi University.

    Kamene Goro

Currently regarded by many as the queen of morning radio, Kamene Goro dazzles her listeners with her mellow voice alongside Felix Odiwuor, popularly Jalang’o on Kiss FM.

Unknown to many, however, is the fact that Goro does not possess a degree in journalism but studied law.

She pursued her law degree at the University of Nairobi (UoN).

    Mukami Wambora

Growing up, Citizen TV sports anchor Mukami Wambora knew that she always wanted to be a lawyer but the deal-breaker came when she enrolled to study for the course.

It wasn’t until she studied law that she found out that it wasn’t her cup of tea.

Her journey into the sports world began while she was at the Kenya School of Law. She started a sports blog and began analysing sports on radio as a hobby.

She went to the University of Liverpool for her Law degree and decided that her future was better placed in media during her part-time work as a sports presenter at Capital FM.
