  • Students from Sacred Heart Kyeni Girls High School in Embu county raised Ksh2 million in a funds drive aimed at paying for fees for their needy colleagues.

Speaking to Nation Africa on Saturday, June 25, the school principal, Lenah Ngesa, stated that they were able to surpass their target after holding a Harambee at the institution yesterday (June 24).

She stated that the students were targeting 5 students whose parents were unable to pay for their education.

Ngesa affirmed that they would continue with the initiative to ensure that more needy students enrolled at the institution benefit from the funds.

“We want every child who gets admitted to this school to complete education and that is why we are supporting the girls’ initiative. Some girls have serious challenges and the initiative by the students is most welcome.

“Students with the help of teachers, parents, friends and school sponsors have contributed enough money to sponsor the five needy learners fully for two years,” she stated.

On their part, the student leadership stated that they were able to meet the Ksh2 million target through various initiatives such as selling sweets and handkerchiefs to their fellow students.

Esther Adasha, the chairperson of the Ambassadors of Mercy Club, revealed that they were motivated to pursue the initiative as they did not want their colleagues from dropping out of school because of lacking fees.

“It was our initiative. We formed the club with the assistance of teachers to help our colleagues who have challenges in paying school fees. We want to touch someone’s heart by doing good,” Adasha stated.

Embu Catholic Bishop, Paul Kariuki, who had been invited as the chosen guest, urged other schools to emulate the students who decided to take action to save their colleagues from dropping out of school.

“This is a great idea which the Church supports. The girls should keep up the spirit,” he stated.
