  • The government has directed all civil servants to get the first vaccination against Covid-19 by August 23, 2021, or face disciplinary action.

In a statement on Monday, August 9, Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua noted that there was a low uptake of the vaccine among public servants.

Kinyua noted that the most affected were those in the security sector, teachers and the core civil service.

“This is against a background of access to vaccines having greatly improved, especially among these groups,” reads the statement in part.

He decried that some civil servants had deliberately avoided getting vaccinated so that they could stay away from work under the guise of working from home.

He warned that such excuses had negatively affected service delivery to the public.

“It has, therefore, been decided that all civil servants will be prioritized in the ongoing vaccination exercise and that those who will not have been given the 1st jab by August 23, 2021, be treated as discipline cases and appropriate action taken against them,” reads an excerpt of the statement.

Kinyua instructed Principal Secretaries and accounting officers to ensure that the directive had been implemented.

As at Monday, 2,323,100 vaccines had been received. 1,105,470 had been received for the first doses while 698,905 were received for the second doses.

Meanwhile, the Gathoge police post in Gichugu Constituency, Kirinyaga County has been closed for 10 days after six police officers at the station tested positive for Covid-19.

Kirinyaga Police Commander Leah Kithei stated that five of the officers were in quarantine at the station while one was receiving treatment in hospital.

“We cannot shutdown the police post but my officers are still there but we are advising the locals to seek services at Kutus police station,†Kithei stated.
