  • Former Kenya Film and Classification Board (KFCB) Chief Executive Officer(CEO) Ezekiel Mutua has lost a legal battle with the government following his dismissal from the body.

The High Court in Nairobi, on Tuesday, February 1, dismissed a petition filed by Mutua challenging his ouster at the helm of KFCB.

Mutua had sued the government over what he claimed was an unfair dismissal on August 6, 2021.

Initially, the ex-CEO had dismissed claims that he had been axed after a letter went rounds on social media. The letter attracted comments from several leaders including Maueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo

“Ezekiel Mutua unlawfully removed by CS Mucheru as CEO after being lawfully appointed by the board. Laws are mere suggestions for this administration,” Kilonzo wrote on his social media page.

However, Information Communication Technology (ICT) Cabinet Secretary (CS) Joe Mucheru confirmed that he had been sent on terminal leave.

The CS appointed Communications Authority of Kenya’s (CAK) Director of Communications and External Affairs, Christopher Wambua, as the new CEO. It was then that Mutua moved to court seeking to quash the CS’s action to replace him.

Speaking to kenyagist.com on Friday, August 13, Mutua revealed the part that he would chart following his dramatic ouster. He  stated that he has resolved to make personal investments aimed at promoting clean content in the country.

Popularly referred to as the Moral Cop, he stated that the idea of a society generating clean content is his passion which he is willing to invest in through education, networks, and financially to nurture those willing to conform to the idea of ‘clean content.

“I think it would suffice to say that I am overwhelmed by the positive reaction and the expression of interest by so many youths in the creative arts sector who want to team up with me in furthering the idea,” the  ex-KFCB boss reveled.

On September 21, 2021. Mutua revealed how  he assisted two youth in 2016 to land a lucrative deal with Ida Odinga, the wife of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader, Raila Odinga.

He met both David Kyalo and Cephas Gathii at Ofafa Jericho Secondary School in 2016 during a career talk. Their impressive presentation of a business idea impressed Mutua, who gave them his business card.

The three united at the Youth Entrepreneurs Expo in 2021, where they made a second impression in the organisation of the event.

“The branding was exquisite and the speakers were insightful and impeccable. I connected with some amazing young people whom I ended up getting jobs through connections created by David and Cephas.”

Their professionalism embodied by the two led Mutua to connect them with Mama Ida Odinga, for a mega event, she was organising at the time. Mutua vouched for the two young men, and true to his words, they delivered the promise – in what Mutua termed it as “an event that looked as if it was coordinated by an international company.”
