Tanzanian President John Magufuli on Wednesday, May 20 opened up on details of his phone call with President Uhuru Kenyatta to solve the border row between the two countries.

Magufuli was speaking during his tour to Singida region of Central Tanzania where he also provided an update on Coronavirus in the province.

“The other day, I received a call from Honourable Kenyatta, the Kenyan President. He called me when I was still in Chato and we discussed a little about Corona.

“I also spoke to him today and we agreed that there is a border dispute. Kenyans are our friends, there are Maasai’s in Kenya and Tanzania same as Luos and Kurias,” detailed Magufuli.

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Chairman noted that the Covid-19 pandemic should not be the source of disagreements between the two neighbouring nations.

Magufuli revealed that they had agreed to an amicable solution to the border dispute that had been going on since Saturday, May 16.

“We agreed with Honorable Kenyatta that our Ministers of Transport and the Provisional Commissioners here in Tanzania who are from Mwanza, Mara, Arusha, Kilimanjaro and Tanga will meet their counterparts from Kenya.

“They will discuss this issue and finish it. We need business and Kenyans too need business here,” noted Magufuli.

The Tanzanian president who was speaking atop his car shared a light moment with residents of Singida as he asked his driver to step out to confirm to people he was Covid-19 free.

He posed a question asking if all the drivers from his motorcade would have tested positive if they went to the border.

On Wednesday, May 20, the Government of Tanzania accused Kenya of falsifying truck drivers’ Covid-19 results in order to kill tourism in the country a day after Kenyan truckers were barred from entering the country.

This was, in part, a response to President Kenyatta’s Saturday, May 16, decision to order the closure of borders with Tanzania and Somalia as cross-border Covid-19 infections continued to rise, allowing only truck drivers.
