  • The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) says preliminary investigations into the violence meted on Azimio La Umoja presidential hopeful, Raila Odinga, was organised by two Members of Parliament with the help of David Kiplagat, the Uasin Gishu County Assembly Speaker.

The DCI named Caleb Kositany – MP Soy, and Oscar Sudi of Kapseret as the main planners and funders of the chaos.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the chaos was organized and coordinated by Caleb Kositany, MP Soy Constituency, Oscar Sudi, MP Kapseret Constituency, and David Kiplagat, Speaker of Uasin Gishu County Assembly,” stated the DCI.

Consequently, the DCI has summoned the three to appear before the Rift Valley DCI Regional Coordinator on Sunday, April 3, at 9 am for interrogation.

“In view of the foregoing, the two legislators and County Assembly Speaker have pursuant to Section 52 of the National Police Service Act 2011, been summoned to appear in person before theĀ Rift Valley DCI Regional coordinator on April 3, 2022, at 9 am, for further investigations into their involvement in the incident,” read the statement in part.

The statement by the DCI comes hours after the National Police Service (NPS) released a statement revealing that 17 suspects had been arrested in connection with the chaos.

Police noted that they recovered notes of Ksh50 from the suspects and mobile phones that were taken for forensic analysis.

“NPS wishes to inform the public that 17 suspects have been arrested and help with the investigation. The suspects were found in possession of cash money in Ksh50 denomination, including mobile phones which are aiding with forensic analysis,” NPS stated.

Earlier, Raila and his team stated that they held the Soy MP responsible for the chaos, explaining that they observed unusual behaviour from the Legislator during the burial.

The Uasin Gishu incident has caused an uproar among many Kenyans and has been condemned by leaders across the political divide.

In a presser on April 2, Deputy President William Ruto apologised to the ODM party boss, further stating that the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) will not give nomination certificates to leaders found responsible for the chaos.

“I have instructed the party to work with the police so that we can get to the root of what happened yesterday in Eldoret and if any of our party candidates were involved, we are going to take disciplinary action against them for the violence that was meted against the Hon. Raila Odinga,” the DP stated.
