  • IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati has issued a condolence message to the family of the slain Embakasi East returning officer, Daniel Musyoka.

In a statement released on Wednesday, August 17, Chebukati noted that the commission was engulfed in grief following the death of the IEBC staff.

According to the IEBC Chair, Musyoka’s perpetrators were upset by his refusal to give in to the demands to compromise his integrity.

“The commission is saddened by the murder of its Returning Officer for Embakasi East Constituency and expresses its deepest condolences to the family and friends, “read the statement in part.

“The commission condemns the murder of Musyoka, who went missing on August 11, 2022.”

Chebukati also praised the late Musyoka for choosing to stand for his integrity in delivering his mandate as the returning officer.

Further, the IEBC boss likened Musyoka’s death to the demise of former IEBC ICT manager, Chris Msando, who passed away days before the 2017 General Election.

“Just like Msando, Musyoka was murdered while on duty. It is unfortunate that his stand to do the right thing cost his life,” the statement reads.

Chebukati also spoke against the intimidation and arbitrary arrest of his staff.

The Commission, he stated, was concerned that some of its critical staff who objectively and impartially performed their duties at the National Tallying Centre were unable to report to the office for duty.

“During the announcement of the presidential results, the chairperson, commissioners Prof. Abdi Guliye and Boya Molu, and CEO Marjan Hussein were physically attacked, assaulted, and injured by persons in the company of certain political leaders. This harassment must stop forthwith,” he lamented.

Musyoka’s body was discovered on Monday, August 15, in Kajiado County. Police have since launched a probe into the circumstances that could have led to his disappearance and eventual death.

A post mortem was conducted on the body on Wednesday, August 17, to ascertain the cause of death.
