Rai did not suffer serious physical harm despite his VW GTI Polo rolling several times before it nose-dived at Kedong.
The accident leads to an automatic nullification.
Following the accident, Rai has been flown to Nairobi for a check-up.
In an amateur footage seen by kenyagist.com, shocked rally enthusiasts responded fast by returning the vehicle to position and checking whether any of the crew members had been hurt.
Afterward, the onlookers moved aside to avoid an accident from any of the other rally vehicles.
Rai is a three-time Nakuru rally winner and is one of the drivers Kenya hoped would have given other nationals a run for their money.
Before participating in the championships, the vehicle had been rebuilt and tested. Rai had expressed gratitude to the government for allowing him to participate.
“It is a dream come true… The difference between the top cars and our cars is a big difference but all the same, we hope to show the international drivers that Kenya has some talent and maybe one day, one of our boys will get a chance to drive the big cars,” he stated in a previous interview.
