Court Stops 25 Percent Excise Duty

Traders were relieved after the High Court suspended the implementation of the 25 percent excise duty on all imported furniture.

This follows a petition filed by activist Okiya Omtatah that the Financial Bill that imposed the duty was passed without proper public participation and would burden taxpayers.

The imposition of the 25 percent excise duty was seen as a move to protect the local industry but the court noted the imposition of the import duty and VAT were already achieving the goal.
