Kananu, in an address on Sunday, March 7, revealed that she was heartbroken by the rampant land grabbing cases in Nairobi affecting social amenities such as schools and hospitals.
Without giving timelines on the planned crackdown, the acting county boss vowed to ensure that all the recovered land is put to good use.
“We want to make sure all public land is well-utilised. If it is school land, let it serve its purpose,†she stated according to Daily Nation.
Kananu was speaking during a fundraising meeting at the African Independent Pentecostal Church of Africa (AIPCA) in Utawala.
Kananu promised to improve water delivery services in Nairobi to ensure that precious commodity gets to as many people in the county as possible.
Education and Sports minister Janet Ouko, who was also at the fundraiser, had earlier noted that cases of land grabbing were on the rise.
“Many of the land issues in Nairobi come from churches. Let’s protect our schools, social halls [and other facilities] and stop erecting tents in schools.
“If you try to intervene, they tell you to go slow if you value your life,” lamented Ouko.
The warning adds to the changes in Nairobi Land Sector after Nairobi Metropolitan Services unveiled a new system that will determine land rates in a bid to raise county revenue.
Property owners around the city have been paying rates at between 25 and 34 percent depending on the location of the property. The currently used Valuation Roll was prepared in 1980 and was implemented in 1982.
The law states that the main Valuation Roll to be prepared after every 10 years and should be updated annually.
