Speaking at an interview on KTN News, Mutua revealed that he was working as a journalist at the time and was shooting videos inside a train in Tunduma, on the border of Zambia and Tanzania.
The governor stated police officers, who were manning the train station, immediately pulled him out of the train and detained him.
However, he revealed that he was released after one of the police bosses thought he was an American citizen due to his dressing.
“I got arrested in a place called Tunduma on the border of Zambia and Dar es Salaam. I was a journalist and I was filming on a train as I was doing a documentary.
“I was pulled out of the train and detained at a police station because I was holding a camera. I was later rescued by a commander because I was wearing a jumper written Washington University and they thought I was an American,” he recounted.
Mutua stated that the incident was one of the most memorable moments of his life and has never shared the story with the public.
As a journalist, Mutua worked with the Nation Media Group and was later appointed as a government spokesperson by the late President Mwai Kibaki during his second term.
He was also the brains behind ‘Cobra Squad’ a Kenyan action thriller that aired on NTV.
Additionally, he stated that there were many things that people do not know about him even as he disclosed that he is a family man who keeps his children away from the media in order to protect them.
He stated that he maintains a close relationship with them and they occasionally enjoy family moments together.
“People actually do not know that I am a father. I do keep my children from the media. I love them very much and I am very very close to them,” he stated.
