  • Maendeleo Chap Chap leader Alfred Mutua has revealed intrigues behind his negotiations with Deputy President William Ruto that will make him the third most powerful individual in Kenya Kwanza Government.

In an Oped he authored for the Daily Nation on Sunday, May 15, Mutua revealed that he would serve as the Deputy Chief Minister if the Kenya Kwanza Coalition wins the August 9, General Election.

He further noted that his new position would place him directly under Amani National Congress (ANC) party leader Musalia Mudavadi who would serve as the Chief Minister.

Mutua further noted that his position would also include a ministerial portfolio in Infrastructure Development.

“Dr Ruto made it clear that Mudavadi had negotiated for Chief Minister: he offered me the Deputy Chief Minister position with a ministerial portfolio in Infrastructure Development.

“His interest in me is not just about winning but the wealth of knowledge and ‘chap chap’ ability to work and transform Kenya that I would bring to his government,” stated Mutua.

He further explained that he left Azimio-One Kenya, led by Presidential aspirant Raila Odinga, because most of their activities were done in secrecy.

For instance, he argued that he was never given a clear role while still in the coalition and that most of its partner parties were left in the dark.

In Kenya Kwanza, however, the governor stated that discussion gravitated around each party’s strength and what role they would play within the Government.

He noted that he believed, due to the secrecy in decision-making within Azimio, that its Presidential flag bearer Raila Odinga was being held hostage.

“Let me start by clarifying that I find Hon. Raila Odinga is a good man but in the coalition he is leading, he is a man held hostage… some poor and undemocratic decisions by Azimio make me worry that Raila Odinga is not in charge,” he stated.

He cited utterances by Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Francis Atwoli who is on record claiming that Uhuru is too young to retire.

“Statements by COTU leader Francis Atwoli and others that “Uhuru is too young to retire†were of great concern. I like Uhuru, but as a democrat, I believe it is vital to give opportunities to others to ascend to power,” he argued.

As part of his Kenya Kwanza deal, Mutua negotiated for an option to be nominated in the National Assembly or the Senate where he will be the Majority or the Minority leader.
