Kilifi was one of the initial Covid-19 hotspots at the coast with the most notable case being the dramatic refusal of Deputy Governor Gideon Saburi to observe self-quarantine directives following his trip from Germany.
Kingi, who had to go on self-quarantine after being on contact with his deputy, on Wednesday, launched the four-storey Kilifi County Covid-19 Medical Complex that was converted into a 150-bed isolation centre with two critical care rooms fitted with ventilators and ICU beds.

Speaking during the launch, Kingi took the time to thank Akothee for her unwavering support during the Coronavirus pandemic.
“Before I speak, I also have a friend from Kilifi, you’ll know a close friend in times of despair. There are people we didn’t think would stand with us or give us a shoulder to lean on as people of Kilifi but many people turned out.
“A lot of people and companies turned out and they still stand with us. Among the many that turned out, today we have Madam Boss Akothee.
“She has walked with the people of Kilifi since the pandemic started and even yesterday she called me saying there is a lot she has in plans. Soon she will be able to unveil those plans.
“Thanks so much, Akothee, many don’t know but she’s from Kilifi, Mtwapa, she is at home and is helping her people,” said the Governor.
On Monday, April 13, Akothee donated foodstuff to residents of Mtwapa through her Akothee Foundation.
“She has given out foodstuff and also gave out clothes. Her support has been immense close to Ksh500,000 and she did not do this publicly but donated to the governor for distribution.
“She also said that she will be supporting the governor whenever he goes. So today she came when we were launching the health facility. She’s one of the best supporters of Kilifi,” said a source at the county government.
