Police in Kisii Tuesday evening repulsed rioters scaling a fence to overrun Kisii Central Police Station.
The fence around the station was already going up in flames as the protests wore on by late Tuesday.
The attempt to overrun the station was thwarted after police fired live bullets.
Early, the protesters pelted the Station with stones damaging a part of the colonial structure.
Police in riot gear and others armed exercised restraint even as other protesters lit bonfires in the street between the Central Bank and the Capital Roundabout paralysing traffic.
For fear of looting, some traders closed their shops in a huff.
At some point, especially at the Capital Roundabout, pockets of protests pelted two officers walking back to the station.
It is suspected the officers were guarding a bank and were returning from work when youths threw stones at them.
