The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has heightened its stance on motor vehicle inspection by introducing new fee rates and tougher penalties for motorists contravening the rules.
According to the Motor Vehicle Inspection Regulations, 2023, the annual inspector license increased from Ksh3,000 to Ksh5,000.
Further, inspection centres located in cities would have to part with Ksh250,000 annually, while those located in municipalities would pay Ksh200,000. Centres located in other regions will remit Ksh150,000.
In the regulation, all private vehicles which are more than four years old from the recorded date of manufacture were required to undergo a motor vehicle inspection test after every two years.
All Commercial Vehicles, Public Service Vehicles, Driving School Vehicles and School Buses will also be required to undergo two inspections; a pre-registration inspection before registration and an annual periodic motor vehicle inspection thereafter.
Salvage (damaged)vehicles shall also undergo an inspection after the necessary repairs and upgrades are carried out and an annual periodic inspection thereafter.
All vehicles which undergo any changes in the length, height, width, maximum payload, vehicle color, engine swap, and other major structural or mechanical changes shall be subject to a modification inspection.
Here is a breakdown of the type of inspection according to the class of a vehicle and the rates:
Motorists with motorcycles and three-wheelers will pay Ksh1,300 – an increase of Ksh800 as opposed to the Ksh500 fee rate in 2022.
Drivers with vehicles below 3,000cc will pay Ksh2,600 while those with vehicles above 3,000cc will pay Ksh3,900.
The inspection fee for trailers under 5 tons is Ksh2,600 and a Ksh3,900 charge for trailers over 5 tons.
Inspection of heavy commercial vehicles less than five tons incurs a Ksh3,900 fee while vehicles over 5 tons will attract a Ksh4,600 fee. The inspection report for accident vehicles is Ksh2,600.
