As President William Ruto continues to woo members of the opposition to his side, Azimio La Umoja Coalition sought to put its house affairs in order with a two-day meeting in Machakos County.
The meeting announcement was made by the Minority Leader in the National Assembly Opiyo Wandayi who emphasised it was crucial for all members to attend.
Wandayi who is allied to the former Prime Minister Raila Odinga stated that the meeting was aimed at streamlining the party’s internal affairs.
The Ugunja Member of Parliament spoke on Tuesday, February 7, adding that the meeting was scheduled for Thursday, February 9, and Friday, February 10.
This announcement came hours after eight members of the Orange Democratic Party (ODM), including Lang’ata MP Phelix Odiwour alias Jalang’o, visited Ruto at State House Nairobi.
“It has got nothing whatsoever to do with what transpired in State House. The meeting is basically to prepare ourselves for the commencement of the parliamentary meetings,” he insisted.
Following the meeting with Ruto, Wandayi noted that some MPs present had sent apologies and regrets to the party.
“The scheduled Thursday meeting is an Azimio parliamentary group meeting which will be held in Stoni Athi Resort in Machakos County,” he disclosed.
Furthermore, according to Wandayi, the in-house meeting was aimed at discussing matters of the party after the August 2022 General Election.
In addition, Wandayi noted that in the meeting the MPs are expected to bond with each other as they plan a way forward for the party.
“In my capacity, I encourage all MPs to avail themselves for the crucial meeting. It can only happen once in a session,” he noted.
However, despite other members from the opposition party coming out to condemn the State House meeting, Raila has not publicly issued a statement on the same.
