  • Days after a vessel christened ‘floating campus’ docked at the port of Mombasa on Sunday, November 27, a debate ensued about the ship’s state-of-the-art features.

Cruise Liner World Odyssey, in its maiden voyage to Kenya, carried 500 students who were taught about the country’s history.

The five-day trip culminated in visits to sites such as Fort Jesus, Tsavo National Park and Haller Park.

    Features

Resembling a college due to its architecture and design, the vessel has special features accredited globally for meeting the safety and program requirements.

To house the students, the ship consists of double cabin rooms which accommodate 600 program participants. All cabins are equipped with a closed-circuit TV, mini-refrigerator, closets, drawers, a restroom (shower, toilet, shelf space), and a safe shared between cabin mates.

Upon request, linens, towels and cabin cleaning are provided by cabin stewards. The cabin is divided into three; student cabins, lifelong learner cabins and staff cabins.

Other amenities include a reception and administrative offices, a large and majestic Anderon Student Union with upper and lower level seats that can accommodate all students and faculty members.

The vessel has nine classrooms, each consisting of state-of-the-art technology to support engaged learning.

A fitness centre equipped with an indoor gym, weight machines, free weights and cardiovascular equipment. The centre also offers recreational activities such as basketball, and volleyball, an outdoor pool and an outdoor dining area nearby.

Located on deck nine, is the wellness centre that allows students to cope with stress by engaging in relaxing activities.

The luxury ship is also equipped with dedicated satellite communications to enable round-the-clock connectivity. It has air lubrication systems to reduce friction between the hull and seawater. This feature enables the vessel to reduce fuel consumption.
