Turkana Central Sub-county Police Commander David Mburuka revealed that the 38 had evaded arrest on Thursday, May 7, 2020, after officers raided a training session.
The 38 teachers were part of a cohort of 61 tutors who were being trained on how to conduct online studies.

A report by Daily Nation on May 7, stated police shot in the air to flush the tutors out of the premises, after which the 38 escaped, and 23 were escorted into custody.
Mburuka, while addressing the media on Friday, May 8, announced that all the 61 had been quarantined at Lodwar county and referral hospital.
The tutors had converged at the Mission of Hope Napuu to undergo training on how to school their students virtually.
The incident happened when the government has intensified the crackdown on public gatherings and crowding while taking drastic measures to combat the fast-spreading Covid-19 virus.
Luckily for them, they will not incur expenses after the government moved to waive quarantine fees, resulting from the public outcry and members of the public shying away from mass testing rolled out by the government.
The move by the teachers shone the light on the need to continue schooling pupils and students amid the pandemic.
This followed reports of candidates in the areas lacking the opportunity to uninterruptedly continue with learning at home, owing to the disparity between urban and rural areas, and lack of access to facilities.
Following the directive by President Uhuru Kenyatta to close schools on March 15, 2020, the disparity in learning between pupils and students in the country has become evident.
On March 27, 2020, the Ministry of Education kicked off virtual lessons via television and radio, however, some students in Kenya’s marginalised regions are unable to access these.
