2 Kenyans Caught Sneaking Ksh1 Billion Contraband From Dubai

  • Two Kenyans are among the three individuals who were arrested at an Indian Airport immediately after touching down from Dubai.

    Media outlets from the South Asian country reported on Sunday, April 3, that the trio landed at the airport in Kolkata before they were nabbed by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI).

    The three, who included two Kenyans and a Malawian national, were found with heroin valued at Ksh1.7 billion shillings (Rs 113 Crore).

    Upon arrest, the two Kenyans are said to have argued that they were in the South Asian country on a medical visa, specifically for a check-up in New Delhi.

    The officials, however, carried on with the search and uncovered that the contraband had been stored at the false bottom of the luggage.

    According to the Times of India, the authorities found 14 packets of heroin in the bag and it was believed that the consignment was destined for Delhi.

    Over recent months, India has emerged among the top destination for contraband goods ranging from drugs to fake Gold bars.

    In the last two months alone, more than five Kenyans have been arrested upon touchdown in the South Asian country for being in possession illegal goods.

    At the beginning of March, two other Kenyans were arrested by Indian security agencies after they were nabbed trying to sneak heroin valued at Ksh900 million (60 million Rupees) in one of the country’s airports.

    The duo had been arrested shortly after arriving at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) Airport in the city of Ahmedabad.

    The operation was led by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) which is the premier intelligence and enforcement agency of the Government of India on anti-smuggling matters.

    On March 27, An Indian tycoon was also arrested at an airport after leaving Nairobi. The tycoon, Sanjay Radheylal Gupta, was wanted for fraud claims after hiding in Kenya for 10 years.

    Towards the end of March, two Kenyan smugglers were also arrested at an Indian Airport while in the process of smuggling gold valued at Ksh113 million.
