SGR Deal That Landed Swazuri in Jail - EACC Reveals

Ethics and Anti-Corruption Fee (EACC) CEO Halakhe Waqo on Saturday announced particulars of the land offer that noticed National Lands Fee (NLC) Chair Muhammad Swazuri arrested on Saturday.

Swazuri is among the senior officials at NLC and the Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) set for prosecution, with Railways boss Atanas Maina also apprehended.

Waqo held a press convention at Integrity Centre revealing facts of the irregular payment compensated for a piece of land in Embakasi, Nairobi.

He disclosed that KRC and NLC paid compensation to people and entities affected by design of the Typical Gauge Railway (SGR) for land which lies on the railway reserve in Embakasi.

It was verified that the land recognized as Railway Lawn was, essentially, presently owned by the general public.


In line with the financial crimes act, the EACC carried out investigations and submitted a report to Director of Community Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji.

The situation is reminiscent of the raging Ruaraka land scandal in which Swazuri is also implicated in the payment of Sh1.5 Billion to purchase a 13 acre piece of land that was by now owned by the community.

The DPP agreed with the agency that there was sufficient proof to see the suspects encounter a litany of graft and economic criminal offense-associated fees.

They are to be arraigned in court on Monday, 13th August 2018.

Suspects who ended up yet to be captured were directed to existing them selves at Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) places of work.
