Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Tuesday, May 26, urged the government not to rush the decision to reopen schools revealing that the move could be disastrous.

Raila was speaking in an interview with Milele FM at his home in Karen, Nairobi and touched on a number of issues including cushioning of those affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

With the reopening of schools being a contentious issue in the country as the public are divided on the exact date when schools should be back in session, Raila noted that schools should not be reopened anytime soon.

“I don’t support that schools should be reopened just because of exams, between exam and life what is more important?

“Schools can be opened after one year and the current classes be rewinded, what’s the rush for? Where are they planning to take those candidates?” advised Raila.

The ODM Party leader added that the government should exercise patience before schools are reopened in order to put in place measures to curb the spread of the virus in learning institutions.

Raila also noted that the country depends on one final exam which would put some students at a disadvantage because of lack of access to learning materials.

Earlier reports indicated that Raila could be announced as Chairman of the Economic Recovery Team in a new Cabinet reshuffle but he put the rumours to bed during the interview.

Raila also denied having talks with Jubilee Party over a possible merger, with the ruling party entering a coalition with KANU.

Numerous people in the country have been affected by the pandemic and floods in various parts of the country with Raila noting that help should be extended to them before referendum talks can continue.

Raila laid bare his relationship with the Deputy President William Ruto revealing that there is no bad blood between them and his partnership with Uhuru was to ensure peace after every General Elections.

A lot of speculation has been surrounding Raila’s presidential bid in the 2022 General Elections but in the interview, he revealed that he is yet to announce his stance.
