  • The Keroche family recorded a win in the latest ruling related to the death of Tecra Muigai in May 2020.

In the ruling on Tuesday, November 17, the High Court ruled that the inquest will be heard at Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi.

The prosecution was seeking to have the hearing moved to Lamu arguing that it was in the county where Muigai is said to have fallen from a flight of stairs.

“All the critical witnesses reside in Lamu and should the case be instituted in Nairobi, they would be gravely inconvenienced,” argued the prosecutor.

Reacting to the ruling, a representative from the prosecutor’s office stated that the office was ready to obey court orders and that ‘it’s not a problem.’

In October, Tecra Muigai’s mother and Keroche CEO Tabitha Karanja had wanted the inquest into her daughter’s death to be done in Nairobi.

Karanja, through lawyer James Orengo, had revealed that she was afraid of Omar Lali, who was Mugai’s lover and a suspect in her death.

Karanja explained that Lali is an influential figure among boat owners and operators as well as beach boys in Lamu.

A statement by Keroche Breweries confirmed her death on Saturday afternoon, May 2, stating that Tecra died following a tragic accident.

“The Board of Directors and Management of Keroche Breweries is deeply saddened to inform that Tecra Muigai Karanja passed away,” read the statement in part.

Tecra suffered cerebral-edema resulting from a fall from a staircase at a house she shared with Omar in Lamu

Until her demise, Tecra was the Strategy and Innovation Director at Keroche Breweries.

Lali was arrested in connection with her death but was freed on May 27.
