  • Henry Onyango, a student at the Technical University of Kenya (TUK), has developed an innovative way to tell when your LPG cooking gas is almost over.

The innovation comprises physical elements as well as a mobile app.

His gadget has a load cell that measures the weight of the gas cylinder and converts it to electric signals that are picked and transmitted to an online database through a Wi-Fi module.

Henry Onyango, a fifth year student demonstrates how to use his app to check the level of cooking gas

The 5th year student, who is specialising in automation and control, explained that the device tracks real-time consumption of gas in a household.

This will help in budgeting at home. One is also able to know what month they spend the most gas and are therefore able to plan ahead,” stated Onyango.

He divulged that he had pitched the innovation to gas manufacturers who warmed up to his technology by revealing that it would protect them from fraudsters who masquerade as licensed vendors.

Dr. Ojenge Winston, a lecturer from the School of Electrical and Electronics Engineering department at TUK, commented that the technology would provide useful data to the industry.

He mentioned that the type of data generated through the innovation would be useful to various groups of people.

It will enable the energy industry to gauge the amount of gas used in a given time. It will also help gas manufacturers know the amount of gas they are selling in regards to varied demographics,” he added
