A witness in the murder case against a former officer from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), Peter Mugure, detailed how three bodies were transported in a Subaru Impreza to be buried in the Thingithu area, Nanyuki, on November 16, 2019.
Appearing before the Nyeri High Court on Tuesday, November 8, the witness demonstrated how he, alongside the accused, reportedly covered up the murder.
The witness claimed that the seats were folded to create more room before covering the bodies, which were found buried in shallow graves in the Thingithu area.
However, defence, lawyer George Gori, countered, arguing that it was impossible to fit three bodies in the back of the vehicle.
“There are gaps in your explanation. I asked whether someone was in the back seats,” Gori told the court.
The witness was asked to revisit his confession after the court granted Gori’s interjection.
“I have shown you how we put the bodies in this car. We folded them. Why are you asking me about the size of the bodies?” he responded.
Notably, the witness was one of the accused who turned into a state witness in the case. He was already serving a five-year sentence for his role in the case while appearing in court.
He was dragged into the case after the main suspect reportedly promised him a position in the military if he helped in transporting the bodies.
Another witness appearing before the court stated that Mugure appeared withdrawn at work after the gruesome murders.
“I saw he was concentrating too much on his phone. At one point, his phone was switched off and everything was erased and set back to factory settings,” the witness alleged.
The former KDF officer, was accused of brutally killing his wife and two children at the Laikipia Airbase.
The autopsy report claimed that the two children were strangled with ropes while the wife was beaten to death.
