At exactly 12 p.m., every Wednesday, starting April 22, Kenyans will halt their activities to clap in honour of healthcare workers under the newly-unveiled ‘Saa Sita” Campaign.

In the campaign launched by Kenya Editors Guild in conjunction with the Kenya Medical Association and the Association of Nurses, Kenyans will be giving an applause to healthcare workers on the front line of the battle against Covid-19.

Similar campaigns have been going on in various parts of the globe with the UK having the “Clap For Our Carers” campaign that involves Britons applauding National Health Service (NHS) workers every Thursday at 8 p.m.

China also had its own campaign as people opened their windows to shout “Wuhan jiāyóu” meaning, “Wuhan, stay strong,” to send words of encouragement to fellow citizens, doctors and medical staff at the front lines of the battle.

In the government’s daily press briefing on Tuesday, April 21, Mwangangi applauded some of the efforts undertaken by various sectors to spread positive Covid-19 messages.

She went on to thank Kenya Defence Forces for flying two choppers in Nairobi with banners written, “God Bless Medics” and the other “Stay Home”.

During the briefing, Health CAS Mercy Mwangangi thanked the Kenyan media for coming up with the campaign.

“Today the Kenya Editors Guild Association together with the Kenya Medical Association and the Association of Nurses has initiated a campaign dubbed “Saa Sita”.

“In this campaign every Wednesday, we will all stop and clap for all our healthcare workers and this is a campaign that is being roles out in different counties across the world.

“This is to appreciate the role of healthcare workers in the crucial role that they are playing in this time of Covid-19.”

The message comes at a crucial time when Kenya is witnessing a spike in cases with Tuesday, April 21, 15 new cases being confirmed bringing the total to 296.

Healthcare workers in the country have complained about lack of enough PPEs and poor pay, in some instances threatening to down their tools.

A number of healthcare workers in Kenya have also tested positive after coming into contact with patients who had Covid-19.
