Kenya Railways has announced plans to add five new passenger coaches on its Standard Gauge Railway train following high demand over the weekends.

This will increase number of coaches from the current 11 to 16 for economy class passengers on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays when booking requests are usually high.

“We were studying travel trends and have noted demand is higher from Fridays,”  Kenya Railways MD Atanas Maina told Business Daily.

The two coaches for first class passengers will however remain unchanged.

The train is currently pulling 11 coaches (118 passengers) on economy class tickets and two (72 passengers) on the first class tickets.

Since its launch in June 2017, the Madaraka Express service has made 1,144 trips, ferrying over one million passengers in the process.

The train has become popular with many Kenyans traveling between Nairobi and Mombasa owing to its fast speed and affordable costs.  It charges Sh3,000 on first class coaches and Sh1,000 on economy class coaches.
