Hundreds of Kenyans were left displaced after massive landslides hit Gachuha village, Githioro Ward, Nyandarua county on the afternoon of December 27 as reported by the Standard.

The landslides came as a result of the heavy rains that rocked the region causing a major river in the area, Turasha river, to break its banks.

County commissioner Boaz Cherutich, revealed to the publication that there were yet to be any reported casualties but search and rescue teams were on standby waiting for the rains to subside before they embarked on their operation.

He revealed that the landslides left at least ten households completely destroyed with several other houses damaged.

The commissioner, however, assured members of the public that both the national and county governments were working in collaboration to help the victims.

Addressing the media, Nyandarua county committee member in charge of Disaster Management Ndung’u Wangenye, affirmed that rescue teams were on the ground.

Wangenye revealed to the Standard that over 20 families and roughly 50 people urgently required aid after they were forced to flee their homes.

“We are traversing the affected area to help rescue the affected families. However, no casualties have been reported,” Wangenyi was quoted as saying.

Residents who spoke to the publication revealed that the landslides had swept several houses and livestock.

My neighbour has lost five cattle and her house has been swept away. We are still pursuing the whereabouts of her remaining livestock. It is very terrifying,” Jane Muthoni, a resident stated.

James Mugo, also a resident, stated that they had since taken the initiative to seek higher ground to avert possible tragedies.

“We are all safe. We moved to higher grounds despite our property being destroyed,” Mugo stated.

According to the report, displaced families are seeking refuge at the Gachuha Primary School.
